His Name Is…

His Name Is_2

November has blown in and out like falling leaves in an Autumn windstorm! December is upon us. Advent….the Arrival. The season we set aside to prepare our hearts and slow our souls and spirits down. So we can…Reflect. Rest. Renew. Rejoice in our Savior, Jesus. So often the impatient spirit in me wants things NOW! And as I reflect on how quickly the month has passed, it occurs to me that all the rushing and impatience of NOW causes me to miss the joy of the moment. Somewhat ironic.

His Name IsOne of my favorite things to study, as I approach the Christmas season, are the Old Testament prophecies regarding the birth and life of Jesus and to see them fulfilled in the New Testament. That’s what advent celebrates…His coming. That moment in time planned and orchestrated so long ago by our amazing God…that glorious moment when “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:1-18) and forever changed life here on earth for eternity! In these amazing passages that foretell of the birth and life of Jesus to come, we learn much about the names and character of Jesus—and this encourages my weary heart and soul in the “here and now”, and as I look toward the future.

Join me each day in December as we stop, slow down and soak in the presence of Jesus—Immanuel, God with us. His presence renews, refreshes and enables us to rejoice in the ALL the moments of this often harried and hurried season. Let’s commit to being intentional this season and not allowing the hurried and harried “NOW” attitude to rob us of the joy and peace Jesus has for us in the moment.

His Name IS Advent Devotion: DAY 1

We’ll begin in Zechariah 9:9. Perhaps you’re thinking it’s an odd and obscure place to begin, but just pause a moment and take it in…

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem.
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

What words or phrases stand out to you? What do you see foretold about the birth, life or death of Jesus? What do you learn about the character and nature of Jesus?

Take a look at some cross-reference verses. What do you learn? How do these encourage you today?

Share with us what you’ve learned by leaving a comment at the end of this post. I’ll share some further insights tomorrow. Until then…Rest. Reflect. Renew. Rejoice…in Jesus’ presence!

  1. December morning, the laundry is started, the elf is placed somewhere new to delight the children, I feel so overwhelmed with much to do and I’ve misplaced the little book I was going to use during Advent this year!! In my inbox is your post….pausing to think deeply on His Word brings such peace. This morning I keep mulling over how humbly He comes, on a donkey, in a manger. He is The King, he left all that is Heaven and came into our very dark world to bring Light….not even a world with the conveniences of America in 2014. I think of how Ezekiel seemed to search for words to describe his glimpse into Heaven, Isaiah became undone, the things John shares in The Revelation and once again am aware that this is a really big deal! This is love and humility that I am unable to comprehend. Thank you Susan for sharing this morning and helping me to focus again on the absolute wonder of Christmas and the humble King who came so we can be reconciled and have peace.

    1. Cathy, thank you for sharing. WOW! Great insight and I love your thoughts on the glimpses of heaven from those in Scripture. Encouraged my heart today!

  2. Hi, Susan, I want to thank you so much for taking time to share in this study. I know for myself this study will be a wonderful blessing as I prepare for the blessed event of the baby Jesus’ coming.

  3. Let us breathe, rejoice in The Lord, count our blessings, value what is truly important, look for ways to bless others in any way, & reflect on what this season really means! Thank you for your beautiful writings!

    1. Pam, thanks for sharing. I love your servant’s heart, love for others and grateful attitude in all things! You are such an encouragement to me.
