November has blown in and out like falling leaves in an Autumn windstorm! December is upon us. Advent….the Arrival. The season we set aside to prepare our hearts and slow our souls and spirits down. So we can…Reflect. Rest. Renew. Rejoice in our Savior, Jesus. So often the impatient spirit in me wants things NOW! And as I reflect on how quickly the month has passed, it occurs to me that all the rushing and impatience of NOW causes me to miss the joy of the moment. Somewhat ironic.
One of my favorite things to study, as I approach the Christmas season, are the Old Testament prophecies regarding the birth and life of Jesus and to see them fulfilled in the New Testament. That’s what advent celebrates…His coming. That moment in time planned and orchestrated so long ago by our amazing God…that glorious moment when “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:1-18) and forever changed life here on earth for eternity! In these amazing passages that foretell of the birth and life of Jesus to come, we learn much about the names and character of Jesus—and this encourages my weary heart and soul in the “here and now”, and as I look toward the future.
Join me each day in December as we stop, slow down and soak in the presence of Jesus—Immanuel, God with us. His presence renews, refreshes and enables us to rejoice in the ALL the moments of this often harried and hurried season. Let’s commit to being intentional this season and not allowing the hurried and harried “NOW” attitude to rob us of the joy and peace Jesus has for us in the moment.
His Name IS Advent Devotion: DAY 1
We’ll begin in Zechariah 9:9. Perhaps you’re thinking it’s an odd and obscure place to begin, but just pause a moment and take it in…
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem.
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
What words or phrases stand out to you? What do you see foretold about the birth, life or death of Jesus? What do you learn about the character and nature of Jesus?
Take a look at some cross-reference verses. What do you learn? How do these encourage you today?
Share with us what you’ve learned by leaving a comment at the end of this post. I’ll share some further insights tomorrow. Until then…Rest. Reflect. Renew. Rejoice…in Jesus’ presence!
