When Your Hands Are Tied!

Joy in Midst Thumbnail

I recently experienced one of those situations when I really wanted “fix” a situation that was out of my control. A loved one was in a difficult situation and there was nothing anyone could do to help or alleviate the problem. My hands were tied!  I wanted to be where they were and fix the problem!  But I was miles apart with no way to get to them or to remedy the situation. I was overwhelmed and concerned and began to fret.  But then I thought…I CAN pray.  I can pray!  That’s huge!  But often it’s our last resort and not our first thought.  So I began to pray and intercede for my loved one.  I prayed for the situation to resolve immediately…it did not.  I prayed for protection and provision for my loved one…it was granted!  I prayed for peace and comfort…it was supplied in abundance! As I was praying, the Lord brought a verse of Scripture to mind and it became my prayer back to the Lord throughout the many hours that followed and as we waited for the situation to resolve itself.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1-2

A very present help —that’s what I needed for my loved one. That’s what I need for myself in that moment.  I needed someone who would be present in the situation and help!

This word, very present, in the original language of the Bible is “masa” and it means to come forth, to appear or exist, to find, to meet or be present.

That’s exactly what I wanted and needed!  Someone to show up and help!  Someone to just be there!  Our God is always, ALWAYS, that ever-present help in trouble.  He is always there!  He will never leave us or forsake us.  In the dark, the desperate and the difficult, He is there!  Look at the second verse of Psalm 46…

Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
Selah

—Psalm 46:2

We will not fear even though the earth gives way, the mountains are moved, the waters roar and the mountains tremble.  Even though…even though things seem impossible.  Even though things seem out of our control.  Even though our hearts are hurting.  Even though we don’t see the end in sight.  Even though…we will not fear because God is!

One of my favorite names of God from Scripture is JAH!  It is a contraction of His name Jehovah.  It means, He IS!  He is.  He is whatever I need in this moment.  He is ever-present.  He is my helper.  He is my stronghold.  He is my refuge.  He is my protector.  He is my shield.  He is my peace.  He is my joy.  We can only live one moment at a time.  Let’s live each one knowing and resting in the knowledge that HE IS in every one of those moments.  That knowledge is a calm assurance to my heart when things are out of my control and seem impossible.  The idea that we are in complete control is a deceptive illusion.  Life is not that predictable.  Life is not controllable.  But if we know the One who created and sustains the universe, we can rest and be at peace.  God does not desire that we try to live managing and fixing all of life’s problems…but rather He allows those situations into our lives to compel us to run to Him and to depend upon Him.

Rejoice today in whatever moments you find yourself knowing that HE IS!
