What’s your favorite Christmas carol? I love to go Christmas caroling and attend Christmas musicals during the season. Today, I encourage you to focus on singing the names of Jesus.

His Name IS Advent Devotion: Day 12

We find the names of Jesus present throughout the carols and hymns we sing each Christmas season. Hopefully some of what we’ve been reading and studying in the names of Jesus, you’ll find in these wonderful songs. I hope you find deeper meaning and a sense of His presence as you sing them this year.

The Word (Christ Incarnate)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. —John 1:1-3

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. —John 1:14

Immanuel

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “ Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). —Matthew 1:22-23

Christ the Lord

And the angel said to them, “ Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. —Luke 2:10-11

Savior

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. —Matthew 1:21

King

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “ Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. —Matthew 2:1-2

Son of the Most High

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. —Luke 1:30-33

Holy One, Son of God

And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy — the Son of God. —Luke 1:35

In his Christmas study, The Sovereignty of God in Christmas, T.M. Moore suggests reading through some of the Christmas carols to see how many different names for Jesus you encounter. How many ways do the carols represent the work of Jesus as Christ and Immanuel? Sing the carols together with a new appreciation for their profound meaning.

Thus we see the sovereignty of God at work in the names associated with the Baby born in that manger in Bethlehem. Jesus Christ, Immanuel: What Child is this? He’s the One anointed by God, the very Word and Son of God incarnate, sent to bring the people of God into the promised land of saving grace and glory. He vanquishes all our enemies – especially those who hold our souls captive. He overcomes every obstacle to our entering the holy place of the Lord. He is with us to fulfill all righteousness and bear all punishment, so that we might be with Him where He is, forever in glory. —T.M. Moore, The Sovereignty of God in Christmas

Rejoicing in Him!
