His Name IS Advent Devotion: Day 18
As we continue to examine some of the prophecies on the birth, life and death of Jesus, we find rich encouragement in Isaiah 9:6. The indescribable gift of Jesus’ presence is expounded upon in this verse. Look at the first part of verse six:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder… —Isaiah 9:6a
Let’s look at the fulfillment of this prophecy in the New Testament and a few cross-reference verses:
A Child is Born:
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you:you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” —Luke 2:11-14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. —Isaiah 7:14
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel
(which means, God with us). —Matthew 1:23
Did you notice the response of the multitude of the heavenly host that were with the angel in Luke 2:11-14? They began praising God! Let’s make this the cry of our hearts and focus as we approach Christmas Day and continue throughout the year.
A Son is Given:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. —John 3:16-17
What has God’s gift of eternal life in Jesus done in your life? How has it changed you?
The Government Upon His Shoulders:
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. —Matthew 28:28
Spend some time meditating up these verses. Think on them, ponder them and pray them. Over the next few days as we approach Christmas Day, we’ll look at the wonderful descriptions of the gifts we are given in Christ Jesus.
